HOW TO KEEP ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES SAFE DURING LOADSHEDDING
Loadshedding’s been around for a long time already in South Africa and is only now starting to be implemented around the globe as electricity issues grow larger and larger every day. We’ve become used to sitting in the dark for extended periods of time, but there’s a different agony of trying to switch on a tv after the power comes back on just to realise the power surge has left the tv screen in a dark abyss. The darkness we can deal with, but when these small surges start costing us our hard earned money we have to start thinking of a solution!
HOW DOES LOADSHEDDING CAUSE OUR APPLIANCES TO BREAK?
After the load-shedding schedule has gone full circle and the power is switched back on, a rush of electricity that’s bigger and stronger in terms of voltage than the typical power flow one usually receives, is supplied directly to your house. Your appliances basically get wacked with more voltage than they can handle and ware down. Sometimes it only takes one surge to give an appliance its first and final blow.
WHAT CAN YOU AND YOUR CLIENTS DO TO PREVENT SURGES FROM DAMAGING APPLIANCES?
OPTION 1: UNPLUG ALL DEVICES AND APPLIANCES
This is probably the cheapest, safest and most effective way to prevent damage, but it’s also the least practical. Running around the house each time the power goes out for almost half an hour just to unplug, and plugin all needed appliances can get frustrating and is hard to keep track of, but it’s effective and doesn’t cost a thing.
It’s as simple as it sounds, when the power goes out, go through the house, and unplug any devices or appliances that could possibly brake due to a surge. When the power comes back on, your client might feel that they want to run to their tv and plug it in immediately. Well, that would be wrong! Sit a little while longer and wait a couple of minutes for the lights too stop flickering and dimming. When the power stabilises, your client can start switching back on their equipment one by one.
Now this isn’t always the best option as client’s aren’t always home to unplug their belongings and as we all know the loadshedding schedule isn’t always on time. Client’s can also find themselves on vacation having to stress about coming home to some broken electronics. That’s why we’ve got another solution to help reduce that stress…
OPTION 2: GET YOURSELF SOME SURGE PROTECTORS!
WHAT ARE SURGE PROTECTORS?
Surge protectors come in a variety of shapes and sizes but all in all serve two purposes. It allows you to plug in multiple components into one power outlet, while also protecting the electronic devices being powered through that power outlet from power surges caused by a sudden power increase like when your power is turned back on after load shedding.
HOW SURGE PROTECTORS WORK
When a sudden surge or spike in electricity comes through a power outlet and into the surge protector, the surge protector diverts any extra electricity into the outlet’s grounding wire, which in the end neutralises the power till the power level decreases back to the acceptable level.
